Director of Bands Zach Smith

Mr. Smith is a graduate of Northern Illinois University with a B.M. in Music Education. At NIU Mr. Smith studied under Dr. Mark Ponzo, Dr. Thomas Bough, and Dr. Mary Lynn Doherty. A native of Illinois, Mr. Smith attended Prospect High School under the direction of David Morrison and Christopher Barnum.

Mr. Smith is in his fifth year as Director of Bands at Waterloo High School after teaching K-8 Band/Music at Emmons School for four years, and 6-8 Choir at Carbondale Middle School for one. 2023-24 is Mr. Smith's tenth year of full-time teaching. Mr. Smith currently teaches or oversees Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Pep Band, Introduction to Guitar, music appreciation, Wind Ensemble, and Percussion ensemble.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities at WHS, Mr. Smith also consults for four time WGI Independent Gold Medalist Chromium Winds during the winter teaching brass and visual, is a marching arts designer, and has worked with many bands in the Bi-State (IL/MO) area, recently writing drill for Pinckneyville HS.

​In 2012 Mr. Smith performed with the 7-time DCI-world-champion Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps based out of Rosemont Illinois.

Mr. Smith loves sports (especially hockey and soccer, go Hawks & #YNWA), loves to travel, fish, tie fly fishing lures, and hike in his free time. He also enjoys exploring all of the amazing natural resources that Southern Illinois has to offer!! Mr. Smith, Mrs. Smith, and their two goofy cats reside in Waterloo, IL after moving down from Chicago.
